2022-23 BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League – Eastern 0:1 Lee Man

Eastern played host to Lee Man in Mongkok Stadium on Saturday evening for a crunching BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League battle. Manu Gavilan’s goal in the first half was all Lee Man needed on the day, as the visitors scrapped past Eastern by the slimmest margin, winning 1:0 away from home.

Barely two minutes into the game, Lee Man’s Everton Camargo unleashed a cracking left footer from outside the Eastern penalty area. Unfortunately for the visitors, Camargo’s shot took a deflection off an Eastern player and went out of play.

On the 10th minute, Lee Man went knocking on the Eastern door once again. Midfielder Ngan Lok-fung found enough opening just outside the Eastern box and pulled the trigger. However, Ngan’s shot lacked the required pace to trouble Eastern goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

Eastern almost caught Lee Man napping on the 14th minute and opened the score. Leung Kwun-chung’s corner-kick from the right side was headed away by a Lee Man player. Eastern’s Alexander Jojo seized the opportunity and drove a dipping long range shot towards the net, forcing Lee Man goalkeeper Yuen Ho-chun to tip the ball over the crossbar.

On the other end, Lee Man’s Chang Hei-yin played a lovely one-two with teammate Manu Gavilan and penetrated deep into the Eastern box. Chang unloaded a tight angle shot from the left side of the Eastern penalty area but could not solve goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai with his effort.

Lee Man went on and drew first blood of the game on the 26th minute. Chang Hei-yin’s corner-kick from the right side ended up bouncing around in the Eastern penalty area. Lee Man forward Manu Gavilan pounced on the opportunity and fired the ball home. The visitors were now leading 1:0.

The visitors came up with a half decent chance to pull further away on the 36th minute, as the lively Chang Hei-yin shook of his marker down the left flank but ended up firing a bouncing shot wide off target. Moments later, Lee Man created another scoring opportunity, yet striker Manu Gavilan connected with a teammate’s corner-kick delivery but sent his one-timer wide off the Eastern goal-post.

On the 41st minute, Lee Man almost bagged its second goal of the game. Everton Camargo’s shot from the right wing was paved over the crossbar by a back-paddling Yapp Hung-fai in the Eastern goal. The first half concluded with Lee Man leading Eastern by 1:0.

Eastern produced the first shot in the second half on the 51st minute. Wong Ho-chun pulled the trigger from the top of the Lee Man box but saw his bouncing strike easily handled by Lee Man goalkeeper Yuen Ho-chun.

The match pace slowed down somehow and the next legitimate scoring chance did not occur until the 75th minute. A slick Lee Man counter attack saw Everton Camargo breaking through down the right wing. Camargo then knocked the ball towards the middle for Givanilton Martins. The latter righted himself and unleashed a right foot curler, only to be denied by Yapp Hung-fai in the Eastern net.

On the 85th minute, Lee Man’s Givanilton Martins’ collected the ball inside the box, spun-and-fired but sent his shot narrowly wide off the Eastern goal.

Eastern almost managed to tie the game on the 88th minute, as Emilio Estevez’s close range diving header was brilliantly paved away by Lee Man goalkeeper Yuen Ho-chun.
