EAFF E-1 Football Championship 2019 Final - Korea Republic 2:0 Hong Kong


Hong Kong kicked off its part in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship 2019 Final Korea Republic on Wednesday evening by facing off against Korea Republic in Busan Asiad Main Stadium. Hong Kong braved the chilly conditions on the evening but somehow fell short against the host by 0:2.

Under chilly and windy conditions, Korea Republic wasted no time and started to dominate in possession after the starting whistle. On the 11th minute, Son Junho unleashed a bouncing shot from outside the Hong Kong box but could not solve goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

On the 16th minute, the home side went knocking on the Hong Kong door once again. This time, Kwon Kyungwon pushed forward with the ball outside the Hong Kong penalty area, before ripping a powerful shot that ended up missing the target.

Korea Republic came up with a great chance to open the score on the 20th minute. Park Joo Ho made a great run down the left-wing and knocked a teasing cross towards the middle. The ball was headed away by a Hong Kong defender, only to see Hwang Inbeom stepping up and smashing a one-timer that went wide off the intended target.

Hong Kong came up with a rare but dangerous goal-scoring chance on the 27th minute. Riding on a counter-attack, Cheng Siu-kwan’s pass sent teammate James Ha into the Korea Republic box. The Hong Kong speedster pulled the trigger on a quick-shot but sent the ball narrowly wide off the opposing goal.

Near the end of the first-half, Korea Republic managed to break the game open, as Hwang Inbeom’s majestic free-kick from outside the Hong Kong penalty area hit the goal-post and bounced into the net, putting the home side in front before half-time.

Korea Republic continued to enjoy the upper-hand in the second-half. On the 49th minute, Hwang Inbeom dodged a tackle from a Hong Kong player outside the box and pulled the trigger, only to see his shot nicely smothered by Yapp Hung-fai in the Hong Kong net.

On the 69th minute, the host was at it again. This time, Kim Minjae connected with a teammate’s header but saw his effort paved over the crossbar by Hong Kong goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

It was still Korea Republic afterwards. On the 72nd minute, Yun Illok’s cross from the left-wing found teammate Lee Jeonghyeop in the goal-mouth. The latter went dashing in but sent his one-timer wide off target.

On the 82nd minute, Korea Republic doubled its lead, as Na Sangho’s header from the Hong Kong doorstep found the back of the net. The host was up by two goals at this point.

Korea Republic had one more chance to pull further away on the 88th minute, as Hwang Inbeom’s free-kick from the left-flank was nicely claimed by Hong Kong goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

The score stood towards the final whistle, as Hong Kong fought hard but still suffered a 0:2 defeat against Korea Republic in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship 2019 Final Korea Republic.
