FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 & AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Qualification Round 2 - HKG 0:0 BHR

Hong Kong hosted Bahrain on Thursday evening in Hong Kong Stadium for a highly charged FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 & AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 2 Group C clash. Hong Kong rallied behind its passionate home supporters and forced Bahrain to a 0:0 goalless draw.

Both sides started the game extremely slow and the first legitimate scoring chance did not happen until the 29th minute. Tan Chun-lok and Giovane Da Silva worked together and moved the ball to the top of the Bahrain box. Tan Chun-lok seized the moment and pulled the trigger on a bouncing shot but could not trouble Bahrain goalkeeper Sayed Mohamed Abbas.

On the 40th minute, it was finally Bahrain’s turn, as Mohamed Shaban unloaded from outside the Hong Kong box but could not hit the target with his missile.

Moments later, Bahrain continued with the pressure. Sayed Naser swung the ball towards the middle. Ismaeel Hasan pulled the trigger but could not get past Hong Kong goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

Right before half-time, Mohamed Shaban unleashed a dangerous free-kick from the left-flank that was once again turned away by Hong Kong shot-stopper Yapp Hung-fai.

Hong Kong had a golden opportunity to break the game open on the 62nd minute. Cheng Siu-kwan’s corner-kick delivery somehow found a soaring Roberto Affonso. The latter got off a clean header but sent the ball wide off the Bahrain goal.

On the other end, Bahrain nearly took the lead, as Ahmed Ghailan chased down a teammate’s long ball, then unleashed a hook shot from deep inside the Hong Kong box but fired the ball high.

Several minutes, the visitors had successive scoring chances to take the lead, only to be turned away by a stunning double-save from Hong Kong goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

Bahrain generated another scoring chance on the 86th minute. This time, Ismaeel Hasan pulled the trigger on a tight-angle shot from the right side of the Hong Kong box, only to see his shot hitting the side-netting.

Late in the game, Hong Kong came up with one last chance. Tsui Wang-kit managed to knock the ball towards the Bahrain box. A Bahrain defender duly headed the ball away, only to allow Sun Ming-him to step up and drill the ball over the crossbar.

The score stood towards the final whistle, as Hong Kong and Bahrain shook hands on an exciting 0:0 draw.
