AFC U16 Championship 2020 Qualifiers Group I - DPRK U-15 4:0 Hong Kong U-15


Hong Kong and DPRK clashed heads in Jalan Besar Stadium, Singapore on Saturday afternoon for a crunching battle in AFC U-16 Championship 2020 Qualifiers Group I. Hong Kong put up a courageous fight against a strong DPRK side but still suffered a 0:4 loss against its opponent.

DPRK applied great pressure towards the Hong Kong goal right from the get-go. Early in the game, Yom Chol Gyong, Choe Ryong Il and Choe Song Jin all had great scoring chances but could not locate the intended target.

DPRK nearly drew first blood of the game on the 11th minute. Kang Won found himself on the receiving end of a teammate’s centering pass and pulled the trigger at the back-post but fired the ball wide.

On the 16th minute, DPRK almost went in front, as Choe Ryong Il’s corner-kick found teammate Kang Won. The latter unleashed an acrobatic strike but was denied by Hong Kong goalkeeper Chan Ka-ho.

DPRK continued to apply great pressure towards the Hong Kong goal and finally opened the score on the 31st minute. A Hong Kong defender brought down a DPRK player inside the penalty area. The referee quickly pointed to the penalty-spot and gave DPRK a penalty. Cho Song Jin assumed the spot-kick duty and tucked the ball home, putting DPRK in front 0:1.

DPRK quickly netted a second goal on the 37th minute, as Ri Il Song connected with a teammate’s pass and smashed the ball home from inside the box. It was now 0:2 for DPRK.

It was 0:3 for DPRK on the 39th minute, as Mun Jong Chong unloaded a thunderous striker from the right wing that soared into the Hong Kong net.

Right before the half-time whistle, Hong Kong came up with a rare scoring chance. Lee Lok-him’s swirling free-kick looked set to enter the DPRK goal, only to be sensationally saved by DPRK goalkeeper Kim Hyok Il.

DPRK continued to dominate the proceedings in the second-half. On the 47th minute, Yoom Chol Gyong unleashed a low-drive but was easily handled by goalkeeper Chan Ka-ho.

On the 54th minute, Kang Ju Hyon had the ball in control down the right wing and fired away, only to slice the ball wide off the Hong Kong goal.

DPRK hit the scoreboard once again. On the 61st minute, Mun Jong Chong gave chase to a teammate’s long pass and motored into the Hong Kong box. The DPRK attacker fired a great shot from the edge of the box and found the back of the Hong Kong net, making it 0:4.

It was still DPRK late in the game. On the 79th minute, Ri Kum Chol took aim and fired towards the Hong Kong goal, only to be denied by Chan Ka-ho in the Hong Kong net.

Late in the game, Yom Chol Gyong unleashed a cracking left-footer from the edge of the box but was sensationally tipped over the bar by Chan Ka-ho.

The score stood towards the whistle, as Hong Kong suffered a 0:4 defeat on the hands of DPRK.
