The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Cup will take place on Sunday afternoon, with reigning premier league champion Wofoo Tai Po taking on last season’s “double-winner” Kitchee. The electrifying clash will take place in Mongkok Stadium and kickoff time will be 5:30pm.

Wofoo Tai Po put together a strong run in the final stretch last season and took home the premier league-title, delighting its passionate supporters. However, the New Territories side has gone through a lot of player changes in the offseason and has become a vastly different team. Gone are influential attackers such as Igor Sartori, Joao Emir, Wong Wai and Harrison Sawyer, as well as mainstays such as Tsang Man-fai, Leung Kwun-chung and Eduardo Pares. However, solid performers such as Alessandro Leonardo and Luis Chelbel have remained with the team and will be counted on to lead the side, both on and off, the pitch.

Despite still searching for its first victory of the new season, skipper Luis Chebel insists the team has what it takes to challenge Kitchee in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Cup.

“Everyone knows Wofoo Tai Po has gone through lots of changes in the off-season but it is what it is and the players who remain are going to give their very best on the pitch,” the Brazilian expressed.

“Playing in a one-off competition and fighting for silverware is always exciting. Wofoo Tai Po has some unbelievable supporters and we definitely want to put on a good performance on the weekend and try to come up with the Community Cup trophy, so that our fans can enjoy a memorable occasion.”

While Kitchee might have lost its claim on the premier league title last season, the side nevertheless triumphed in the Senior Shield and the FA Cup, demonstrating that it is still one of the strongest sides in Hong Kong football. New head coach Blaz Sliskovic has taken over the coaching reins and has seemingly inserted renewed energy and excitement to Kitchee. Summer signings such as Cleiton De Oliveira, Manu Bleda and Wellingsson De Souza have all got off the mark for Kitchee and should play a major role for the Blues on the weekend.

Kitchee captain Huang Yang states that the team’s intentions on the weekend remain crystal-clear and the Kitchee troops are going to do their outmost on the occasion, trying to bring the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Cup back to its Shek Mun base.

“With a club of Kitchee’s stature, of course we want to win every single trophy that is available, and that includes the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Cup,” Huang said ahead of the game.

“Wofoo Tai Po has proven to be a dangerous side and we definitely need to be on guard. Having said that, we have a lot of talented and dangerous players in the Kitchee squad and as long as we can play up to our full potential, I do believe we should be able to come up with a positive result on the occasion.”
