Guangdong-Hong Kong Friendly Match (Women) - Hong Kong 2:2 Guangdong

Hong Kong Women’s Representative Team faced off against Guangdong on Wednesday afternoon in Hong Kong Stadium for the Women Guangdong-Hong Kong Friendly Match. Hong Kong displayed tremendous grit on the day by tying the game twice and securing a splendid 2:2 draw against the visiting Guangdong.

Hong Kong fired the first warning shot of the game on the 5th minute, when Cheung Wai-ki teed up teammate Chan Wing-Sze outside the Guangdong penalty area. Chan pulled the trigger but smashed the ball over the crossbar.

Guangdong nearly got in front on the 8th minute, as Liao Meixin connected with a teammate’s free-kick delivery and nodded the ball towards the Hong Kong goal, only to be denied by goalkeeper Ng Cheuk-wai.

Hong Kong had a great chance to take the lead on the 16th minute. Wai Yuen-ting found herself at the receiving end of a teammate’s centering pass and quickly pulled the ball back. Yiu Hei-man stepped up and let rip but could not get past Guangdong goalkeeper Tan Jiali.  

Past the twentieth minute mark, the visitors had successive chances to break the game open. On the 23rd minute, Chen Xiubing’s cross was headed towards the Hong Kong goal by Li Zhijun, only to be easily saved by Hong Kong goalkeeper Ng Cheuk-wai.

Moments later, Chen Xiubing tried her luck with a long-range shot from outside the box but directed her shot wide.

Guangdong finally took the lead on the 32nd minute. Liao Meixin delivered a low cross towards the middle. Zeng Minyi got to the ball and unleashed a cracking shot that beat Ng Cheuk-wai and flew into the net. Guangdong was up by a goal.

The visitors kept the pressure coming and nearly punished Hong Kong on the 35th minute. This time, Li Zhijun picked up the ball on the right side of the penalty area, fought off pressure from a Hong Kong defender and fired away, only to witness her shot going wide.

Guangdong came out for the second-half hunting for the next goal. On the 46th minute, Guo Jinhua drilled a low drive from the top of the box but could not get past the awaiting arms of Hong Kong goalkeeper Ng Cheuk-wai.

On the 52nd minute, Hong Kong sent its supporters into frenzy by tying the game. Yiu Hei-man’s curling free-kick hit the Guangdong wall and bounced back. Yiu stepped up to the rebound and belted the ball into the back of the Guangdong net, tying the game at 1:1.

Guangdong tried to answer back and generated a half-decent chance on the 58th minute. Luo Lisi drilled a long-range shot from well outside the Hong Kong box but could not hit the intended target.

The visitors regained the lead on the 66th minute. Liao Meixin found herself on the receiving end of a teammate’s long diagonal pass. Liao pushed into the box and fired home through the far-post, putting Guangdong in front once again.

Hong Kong tried to equalize and nearly did so. On the 71st minute, Cheung Wai-ki found daylight down the left wing and unleashed a cracking shot towards the Guangdong net, only to slice her shot wide off target.

Hong Kong tied the game on the 79th minute through a fantastic buildup on the left-side. Heidi Yuen picked out Cheung Wai-ki with a superb forward pass. Cheung made a powerful run down the left wing before sending a low cross towards the goal-mouth. Substitute Poon Ka-ka arrived at the scene and duly tucked the ball home. The score was now 2:2.

Both sides failed to add to the score in the remaining regulation time, as Hong Kong secured a gritty 2:2 draw against Guangdong.
