Hong Kong Gunning for Victory against Qatar in Crucial Away World Cup Qualifier

Hong Kong is set to face Qatar on Thursday evening in Doha, Qatar for its final Group C fixture in the 2018 World Cup Qualifier (Asia) Round 2. The match has a significant impact on Hong Kong’s World Cup aspirations and should attract major attention amongst Hong Kong supporters.

Hong Kong has well-exceeded expectations in the qualifying campaign and currently occupies the second position in Group C, only trailing the already-advanced Qatar. Hong Kong is seeking to finish as the runner-up of the group, becoming one of the four “best second-place sides” in round 2 and advancing to the next stage of the qualifiers. While Hong Kong has fourteen points from the past seven games, the side still requires a win to give itself the best possibility to achieve its target, making Thursday evening’s clash against Qatar all the more important.

Hong Kong’s attacking wizard Manoel Santos vows to aim for three points from the Qatar clash. “While a lot of the Hong Kong players have transferred to play for mainland clubs in China, there is no denying that these players are benefiting from playing regularly in a higher standard. For myself, that is very much the case and I hope to bring these improvements and contribute to the Hong Kong team,” said Santos. “We will be going for all the points on Thursday night, pushing for every possibility to advance to the next round of the tournament.”

Forward Paulo Carreira knows it will be an uphill battle for Hong Kong against Qatar but maintains his side is determined to grind out a positive result. “This is a very strong Qatar side and gaining any result is going to be very difficult. Having said that, we are entering the final group match and we need to give it our all. There will not be any psychological baggage for anyone of us and it is just a matter of going all out and fighting together,” declared the ever dangerous forward.
