On Sunday (October 26), Tai Po claimed a comprehensive 3:1 victory over Eastern at Tai Po Sports Ground in the BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League, earning a crucial three points.
The home side dominated early proceedings, with Michel Renner testing the opposition twice in the opening 10 minutes, though both efforts failed to trouble the target.
Tai Po's dominance continued at the quarter-hour mark. A dangerous cross from the right by Ngan Cheuk Pan was met by Paulo Simionato, but his first-time effort flashed wide. Moments later, Chan Siu Kwan Philip rose to meet Igor Sartori's delivery from the left flank, but his header also sailed off target.
The hosts carved out another gilt-edged chance on 26 minutes when Lee Ka Ho threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into the danger area, only for Ngan Cheuk Pan's thunderous strike from an acute angle to narrowly miss the mark.
Eastern enjoyed a rare foray forward at 38 minutes as Okubo Yu slipped a pass into the box for Kawano Taiga, whose effort from a tight angle went wide of the upright.
The encounter burst into life in the dying moments of the first period. On the stroke of half-time, Tai Po broke the deadlock when Paulo Simionato rose majestically to power home Fernando Augusto's right-sided set piece, sending the home faithful into raptures.
However, Eastern struck back in added time with a spectacular equalizer. Marcos Gondra' venomous 30-yard free kick cannoned off the woodwork, and after Tai Po failed to clear their lines, Calum Hall pounced on the loose ball to rifle home a left-footed screamer.
The sides went into the interval locked at 1:1.
Tai Po wasted no time restoring their advantage after the restart. Just 120 seconds into the second half, Igor Sartori picked out Michel Renner on the left channel, and the latter showed tremendous composure to ghost past his marker before unleashing a curling effort that nestled into the far corner—a sublime finish to make it 2:1.
The home side continued to pour forward in search of a cushion. James Temelkovski let fly from distance with a rasping right-footed drive that forced a spectacular diving save, before his towering header from a corner delivery whistled narrowly past the post.
Eastern refused to go quietly and fashioned a promising opportunity on 66 minutes. Calum Hall's right-sided free kick picked out Okubo Yu, whose glancing header was kept out by the alert goalkeeper . The Japanese striker then latched onto a raking long ball and attempted an audacious lob over the advancing custodian, but his effort lacked precision.
Tai Po remained on the front foot in the closing stages, with James Temelkovski collecting a throw-in before swiveling inside the area and rattling the upright from a narrow angle.
The points were finally put beyond doubt deep into stoppage time when James Temelkovski intercepted the goalkeeper’s pass, burst into the box, and coolly slotted home with his right foot to seal a memorable triumph.
Tai Po ran out deserved 3:1 winners, collecting maximum points in front of their jubilant home support.
