Hong Kong Under-23 Representative Team will kick-off the AFC U23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022 Qualifiers Group K by locking horns against Cambodia U-23 in J-Village, Futaba-Gun, Fukushima, Japan. The match will start at 1:00pm (Japan time).

Hong Kong finds itself located in Group K of the AFC U23 Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2022 Qualifiers, with Japan and Cambodia rounding out the group. Only the top-place side of each qualifying group, as well as four best-second-place sides amongst the groups, will make it to the Finals. With only three sides in Group K, Hong Kong must produce positive results from its first match against Cambodia, in order to set itself up for the final group match against host Japan.

Under the guidance of head coach Cheung Kin-fung, Hong Kong Under-23 Representative Team arrived Japan on Wednesday and hit the training ground on Thursday, trying to put the finishing touches on its preparation for Saturday’s fixture against Cambodia. Influential figures such as Tse Ka-wing, Lam Hin-ting, Jordan Lam and Chu Wai-kwan all showed decent form during the training session and should be driving forces in Hong Kong’s fight against the fleet-footed Cambodians on Saturday.

Hong Kong Under-23 head coach Cheung Kin-fung believes his troops are in decent form. With the addition of Leung Yau-wai, who plies his trade in Portugal, Cheung hopes his side can perform up to its full potential in the opening game.

“The team has been busy adapting to the local elements since its arrival in Japan,” Cheung pointed out.

“The local weather in Japan is substantially cooler than in Hong Kong, hence we need to adjust to it as quickly as possible. Thankfully, our match will start at 1:00pm and that should minimize the weather effect on us.”

“In addition, the arrival of Leung Yau-wai to the side will add to the team’s flexibility at the backline. However, Leung only rejoined the team shortly, thus we have been busy communicating with him, hoping to get him fully grasping on our defensive concepts,” Cheung explained.

Hong Kong Under-23 Representative Team winger Jordan Lam hopes his side can get off to a good start in the qualifiers by beating Cambodia in the opening game.

“Cambodia plays a fast game but I think there is really not much separating the two sides. With that in mind, of course we want to open our winning account in the qualifiers in the first game, bringing back all three points,” Lam declared.
