Sha Tin secured a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Grace Citizen in the Jockey Club Women's Football League (1st Division) championship group match held at Kowloon Bay Park on Sunday (June 18). Sha Tin secured their victory by scoring three goals in 15 minutes before the half-time whistle, defeating Grace Citizen 3-1 and claiming three points.
Grace Citizen had more possession after the opening whistle, but failed to create scoring chances in the first half. Their attempts failed to challenge the opponent’s goalkeeper, with Chan Hiu Man's long-range effort missing the target on the 12th minute, and Kwok Oi Laam's powerless shot easily saved by the goalkeeper on the 16th minute. On the other hand, Sha Tin's direct style of play, utilizing the pace of Ma Hiu Wai Nick and Lam Sau Yuk, posed a greater threat. Lam Sau Yuk had a one-on-one opportunity on the 18th minute, but her narrow-angled shot went wide. A minute later, Sha Tin’s corner-kick created a chance for Ma Hiu Wai Nick, but she couldn’t find the target inside the crowded box.
It wasn't until the 29th minute that Sha Tin finally broke the deadlock. Sin Chung Yee picked up a long ball from Hui Yee Sum and had another one-on-one challenge with the goalkeeper. Although her first shot was blocked by a defender, she successfully followed it up with a shot and scored, giving Sha Tin a 1-0 lead.
This goal gave Sha Tin the momentum they needed, and they further extended their lead in the first half. Ot the 42nd minute, Lam Sau Yuk set off an amazing run though the right flank and smashed it home into the top corner, making it 2-0. Just before the end of the first half, Wong Wai Yin scored a screamer for long-range with her right foot, giving Sha Tin a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Sha Tin still enjoyed the upper hands in the early stages of the second half. They produced a solid chance just a minute into the second half. Chan Wing Sze shook off her markers and rounded the goalkeeper, only to see her narrow-angled shot was blocked by Wong Hei Tung in front of the goal-line.
Despite falling behind, Grace Citizen kept looking for a chance to score. Finally, Kwok Ching Man connected with a header pass from a teammate and found the back of the net on the 70th minute, bringing the score to 1-3. With just three minutes remaining, Grace Citizen had another golden chance to score. Kwan Wing Yu danced through two defenders on the left flank and unleashed a powerful shot, the Sha Tin goalkeeper did well to pave it away.
Kwok Ching Man tried to take the rebound but Sha Tin defender was quicker to clear the ball away.
The score eventually stood towards the final whistle, as Sha Tin defeated Grace Citizen through a 3:1 victory, claiming all three points and finished the season in third place, while Happy Valley finished fourth.
