A thrilling match unfolded at Tsing Yi Northeast Park on Tuesday (June 19), where the Jockey Club Women's Football League FA Cup held their third-place playoff. Grace Citizen emerged victorious with a solid 2:0 win against WSE, clinching the second runner-up in the competition.
Grace Citizen dominated the ball from the start, despite struggling to convert possession into opportunities early in the game. Their first real threat came at the 11th minute, when a crafty play from Au Tsz Cheuk Annabelle on the left flank led to a shot from Karin Ishikawa, only to be deflected by the opposing defender. Just two minutes later, Grace Citizen kept up the pressure with a surprise strike from Li Hau Yi on the left, which was comfortably saved by the goalkeeper, Yuen Ho Yan. The 17th minute saw Grace Citizen narrowly miss taking the lead, with a long-range effort from Chan Hiu Man ricocheting off the crossbar. WSE returned fire in the 21st minute, with Tam Ka Ki making a determined run down the right side and crossing into the box, but Chow Wing Yu's shot skimmed wide of the post.
Grace Citizen continued to press, with Chan Hiu Man breaking into the box in the 24th minute following a direct pass from a teammate. However, the ensuing offensive move was neutralized by the quick-reacting goalkeeper, Yuen Ho Yan. A minute later, a long-distance strike from Ng Wai Ching outside the box was safely gathered by the keeper. The first half ended in a deadlock, with neither side able to break the 0:0 impasse.
The second half began with WSE seizing control, capitalizing on a defensive blunder by Grace Citizen. However, Fong Lok Ching's shot from the edge of the penalty area failed to hit the target. Grace Citizen soon regained composure, with Li Hau Yi firing a powerful shot from the left in the 54th minute, which was parried by the goalkeeper. The deadlock was finally broken in the 56th minute when Kwan Wing Yu, after receiving a pass from Ng Wai Ching, unleashed a right-footed strike from inside the box. The ball rocketed into the far corner of the net, giving Grace Citizen a 1:0 lead. WSE had a chance to level the score in the 61st minute, but Sharon Fung's shot off a free kick from the left was blocked by a Grace Citizen defender just in front of the goal line. Grace Citizen then controlled the remainder of the match. In the 72nd minute, a narrow-angle shot from Kwan Wing Yu inside the box was saved by the goalkeeper.
In the 75th minute, a cross from Kwan Wing Yu on the right found the unmarked Chan Wing Ching, but her close-range attempt only hit the side netting. A minute later, a header from Lau Nga Ching Katrina off a corner kick sailed over the crossbar. The 83rd minute saw another golden opportunity for Grace Citizen when Ng Wai Ching launched a long-range effort from 25 yards out, sadly denied by the crossbar. Victory was sealed for Grace Citizen in the 87th minute, with Wong Tsz Kiu slotting in a close-range shot off a free kick from the right, making it a definitive 2:0.
