2014/15 HKFA FA Cup - Kitchee 0:0(5:4) YFCMD


Kitchee took on YFCMD on a glorious Saturday afternoon in Mongkok Stadium, fighting for a spot in the prestigious HKFA FA Cup Final. Both sides traded chances through the regulation time but simply failed to score the decisive goal, pushing the game into a penalty-shootout. At the end, it was Kitchee who managed to come out on top, defeating YFCMD in a 0:0 (5:4) victory.

YFCMD almost opened the score on the 9th minute, when Kenji Fukuda found himself on the receiving end of a Fernando Pedreira corner-kick but headed the ball just wide off the Kitchee goal.

Matthew Lam had a great chance to put Kitchee in front on the 18th minute when the Kitchee midfielder unleashed a ferocious shot from well outside the box. YFCMD keeper Chiu Yu-ming managed to get a hand on the shot and saw the ball deflected off the crossbar and went out of play.

YFCMD nearly found the back of the net on the 27th minute when Leung Kwun-chung’s curling free-kick was sailing straight towards the Kitchee net, only for Kitchee keeper Guo Jianqiao to dish out a superb diving save to keep the ball from entering the goal.

YFCMD continued to threaten the Kitchee goal and almost netted its reward on the 34th minute, when the lively Fernando Pedreira led a counter-attack before whipping the ball to the goal-mouth. Kenji Fukuda headed down the ball but Jose Diaz could not direct his header towards the Kitchee goal.

Paulo Carreiro almost put Kitchee in front on the 43rd minute with a long-range bomb. Unfortunately for the Kitchee attacker, his shot peeled away during its flight and ended up missing the target.

YFCMD came out for the second-half in strong fashion and nearly found the back of the net on the 46th minute, when Fernando Pedreira shook off his marker near the edge of the box before ripping a low-shot that was smartly claimed by Kitchee keeper Guo Jianqiao.

YFCMD continued to lay pressure towards the Kitchee goal. On the 68th minute, Jose Diaz connected with a Fernando Pedreira corner-kick but saw his flying header ricocheted off the Kitchee crossbar and stayed out from the net.

Kitchee had a half-decent chance to go in front on the 89th minute but Matthew Lam fired his free-kick just high above the Kitchee crossbar.

Deep in stoppage time, Paulo Carreiro almost became Kitchee’s hero but the talented schemer fired his close-range shot off-target.

Both sides failed to find the back of the net within ninety-minutes and the game proceeded towards extra-time.

YFCMD came very close to opening the score on the 105th minute when the extremely dangerous Fernando Pedreira darted deep into the Kitchee box before smashing a tight-angle shot that was superbly saved by keeper Guo Jianqiao. Fong Pak-lun latched onto the rebound but saw his effort blocked again by Guo.

Ruben Lopez had a wonderful chance to put YFCMD in front on the 108th minute, when the Spanish defender connected with a Fernando Pedreira corner-kick but headed the ball high above the Kitchee net.

It was still YFCMD on the 112th minute, when Ruben Lopez found himself with the ball inside the Kitchee box. The YFCMD defensive rock wasted no time and fired away but sliced his shot over the crossbar.

Kitchee came very close to getting on the scoreboard on the 119th minute when Jorge Tarres’ free-kick bent over YFCMD’s defensive wall but just went wide off the goal-post.

The goalless score-line remained unchanged after extra-time and the match needed penalty-shootout to determine the eventual winner.

At the end, it was Kitchee who came out on top and defeated YFCMD 0:0 (5:4) in the penalty-shootout.
